I got a new suit today.
Don’t really like it, though.
It’s a lawsuit.
Some big news in the publishing community broke this week, the day after I sent my last newsletter. (Good thing I’m not a journalist.) After over a century and a half of distributing books, Bake & Taylor is closing its doors. They were working on a merger deal, but it fell through, so the company will soon be no more. Most of their business centered around public and school libraries. I pretty much guarantee that if you ever checked out a book from a school library, it passed through that company’s hands first.
What does this mean for you? There’s really no way to tell what the ripple effects will be. Most are looking to Ingram’s various companies to fill the void. However, there will be less competition for a while, which may cause fluctuations in prices. Economics is a messy science at best, but at least you know one of the root causes.
The company was millions of dollars in debt, mostly owing to publishing companies. This makes me quite glad I’m an independent author. The New York style publishing industry is not what most people think it is. The Big Five are getting smaller and smaller every year.
On the writing front, MoonDom Five is back on track. Chapter Twenty-Five is now complete, and we are at 22,329 words. There are 96 redneck memes in the Queue, so only four more before we start formatting the fourth installment of Redneck Lingo. It could be out by Christmas, but I don’t want to rush it. The current jokes for kids WIP is holding steady at eighteen and three quarters pages. We’re basically in a good cruising pattern, so if you keep reading, I’ll keep writing.
On a personal note, I’d like to wish my wife a happy anniversary. We’ve been married for thirty-one years as of this past week. I love her very much, and I’m glad she hasn’t traded me in for a better model yet.
Until Next Time, God Bless!
