How did the inventor of bubblegum first decide to ship his new product to stores?
He loaded it onto a chew-chew train.
In authors/publishing news, we have an unfortunate rise in paperback costs. Draft2Digital just informed authors that print prices are going up in February. For example, many of my titles’ prices will go up by about a dollar to keep the same profit margins. So as you can see, this will directly affect readers. Why is this happening? I’ll be happy to tell you. Don’t worry. This will be apolitical.
First off, it’s probably not tariffs, though they may have some effect. The reason printers are having to charge more is because of supply and demand. D2D uses Ingram Spark to fulfill paperback orders. Ingram is filling the Baker & Taylor void. So we have a huge spike in demand without much growth in supply and prices go up. Basic economics strikes again.
Before moving on, let me just say that D2D is an excellent company. They are my personal favorite because of their dedication to independent authors. I go to them first before the others, like Amazon. I hate that prices are going up, and I’m sure they do too.
If only there were a way to read all my titles without paying any printing costs at all. Oh wait, there is! You may have noticed a couple of additional emails from me over the past week. I’ve decided to add all my middle grade books to this Substack for paid subscribers. Paid subscriptions are $6 a month or $60 a year. For that, you will get access to my middle grade stories as well as audiobooks for most of those titles. I’m working on rolling out the next story, WHiTE, which should be ready in the next couple of days.
Rest assured, my Substack newsletter is and always will be Free. I just wanted to open up a new option for my readers and my titles. Anyway, no pressure. I’m happy to have free subscribers enjoying my content as well. That means a lot to me.
On the writing front, my jokes for kids book is about halfway down the 23rd page, which is better than expected for Christmas Break. MoonDom Five edits are going well. As of last night, I have finished 25 chapters out of 30. Not bad. We’re still on track for a March release, probably the 13th. Preorders and a cover reveal should be available by the end of this month.
Until Next Time, God Bless!
