Frankenstein’s monster left the castle unarmed.
But then he remembered.
Everything’s suspiciously quiet on the publishing front this week. Usually that means something’s cooking somewhere. I reckon this would be as good a time as any to tell you about my banned books. Don’t worry, no politics are involved.
I currently have two banned titles, THE GHOST OF DREAM GULLY and BLOODY BONES. How did this happen? Basically I missed a couple of emails. Since I write for kids and these two books are horror, some platforms are reluctant to publish them under the middle grade category. They prefer young adult. Of course, I totally disagree. My work is appropriate for middle grade readers. There are far more disturbing titles with scary illustrations that have been stocked in the children’s sections of libraries for years, decades even. I do concede, however, that the platforms are just acting responsibly, so I will be happy to change the category. Too bad that I missed those emails! They came in as all my titles were being adopted by the new platform, so they got deleted. Anyway, it will all work out eventually. Just wanted to share my story to let you know that Indy publishing does have a lot more going on ethics wise behind the scenes.
This leads to a little commercial message for you. One of those banned titles is now available to read on this Substack. I posted it yesterday. Please check out the first chapter for free. THE GHOST OF DREAM GULLY is a great award winning ghost story for middle grade readers as well as a mini murder mystery. I will be posting the audiobook in the podcast section later today as well, which will also have a free preview of the first chapter. Giving it a look or listen would be greatly appreciated by yours truly.
On the writing front, the jokes for kids project is over halfway down page 27. I’m not exactly sure when it will get done, but my bet is before the end of the year. I’ve written the introduction and have of the first chapter of my current WIP, Squash Light. It’ll be a dark supernatural comedy for kids, probably. My latest title, MOONDOM FIVE, will go live next month on Friday the 13th. The ebook’s available for preorder right now for 99 cents. It’s a cosmic space opera for kids.
Until Next Time, God Bless!
